Purdue professor creates adhesive that works under water

《Purdue professor creates adhesive that works under water》:

WEST LAFAYETTE –A chemist at Purdue University has developed an adhesive technology that works in wet conditions. The new technology could be used underwater, in medical fields or even help in construction.

Purdue released that the professor, Jonathan Wilker, developed the technology while study the adhesive properties of mussels and oysters.

While current adhesives on the market are made from materials that can be toxic to the environment, Wilker says his adhesive is made from renewable substances.

“We have looked at the design and synthesis changes that we can make and compared our adhesive to what the shellfish are making. The system can be easy to generate on large scales and yet still maintain the functions that we are after,” said Wilker of the new technology.

A video of the adhesive technology in action can be seen here.
