Glue and sponges revolutionize the way we treat wounds

《Glue and sponges revolutionize the way we treat wounds》:

Using super glue to seal wounds is a lifehack that’s been around for a while. It’s useful in a pinch, but it’s not exactly recommended since the chemicals in the glue could irritate your skin.

But a company called Medical Adhesive Revolution seems to have taken this basic idea and run with it.

Glue for wounds
Their creation, dubbed MAR glue, is intended for use by civilian doctors and surgeons. Unlike most surgical glues currently available on the market that accelerate clotting, MAR glue works by allowing surgeons to adhere skin tissue directly together. The wound then heals itself normally.
“It’s just like putting a coat of Krazy Glue when you want to join two pieces of broken china,” said company chairman Ashok Rao.
MAR glue, which is biodegradable, dries in 30 seconds, can be stored at any temperature, and is unusually flexible. The rate at which is dissolves can also be modified, ranging from 30 days for a quick-healing wound, to 90 days for more serious wounds.
The company is planning on creating two types of glue—one for topical sutures and one for application directly on organs. MAR glue is still waiting for FDA approval.
Bullet hole plugs
Meanwhile, company RevMedx has developed X Stat—a device that can instantly plug up bullet wounds to prevent victims from bleeding out before medical help arrives.
It’s a tube that looks like a tampon (which RevMedx CEO Andrew Barofsky admits was an inspiration) and it filled with dozens of tiny sponges inside of it. One end of the tube is inserted into the bullet wound and the sponges are injected into the wound. They absorb the blood, expanding up to 15 times their original size and putting pressure on ruptured blood vessels to stop the bleeding.
At the moment, X Stat is only available for combat use, but Barofsky hopes that it will eventually be used in civilian emergency situations.
